posted 12 May 2010, 21:37 by Gay Cu   [ updated 12 May 2010, 21:56 ]

  • - New website domain to celebrate reaching 500 members
  • Meet-ups across the country for Marriage Equality Rallies (This Saturday)
  • International Day of Homophobia (IDAHO) this Monday 17 May (Gay Cu’s chosen “birthday”)
  • Two new admins – Andrew Frampton (Melbourne), Dave Smartt (Strathfield)

A big warm welcome to all our new members and supporters! A special welcome to all of our first year students for supporting diversity and equality from the beginning of their time at ACU. I encourage you to introduce yourself on the discussion board (or for more privacy the discussion board in your campus group) and feel free to post resources , links and news on the group wall.

If you haven't visited our group info tab for a while, please check it out and become familiar with our vision, purpose and member expectations. I particularly remind you of our 5 Guiding Principles which underpin all that we are and do:
1. Compassion
2. Inclusion
3. Respect for human dignity and diversity
4. Sensitivity
5. Removal of unjust discrimination
(adapted from Section 2358 Catholic Catechism)

Our national group has now grown to over 500 members and our campus groups are also growing. To celebrate reaching our goal of 500 members, Gay Cu has given us all a present of a new website domain name. Check it out – Our website is always being added to and contains lots of info about what we do and how and why we do it.

Our new goal is 750 members by end of Semester 2 (ACU has 17 500 current students, Alumni group has 2500 members, about the same as student association groups/profiles combined). Please invite your ACU friends and together we will foster an even greater feeling of community and inclusion.

If you haven’t yet joined the group for your campus I encourage you to do so as campus specific messages and events as well as state-based resources are available there (and will not generally be posted in the national group)

Brisbane (46 members)
North Sydney (16)
Strathfield (70)
Canberra (13)
Ballarat (17)
Melbourne (78)
Notre Dame (3)

If you are queer, gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex, sex and gender diverse, same-sex attracted and/or questioning then we also have a private Facebook group for you! Ask for an admin invite from Gay Cu. More info:

I am delighted to announce that we have two new national and campus group admins – Andrew Frampton (Melbourne) and Dave Smartt (Strathfield). Their support as officers has been invaluable and I’m sure you’ll all agree that they will be fantastic admins as well. As always, officer positions are available for anyone who asks (queer and allies). You can choose to be a campus or online contact (listed or unlisted). Or you can just ask to have a supportive or funny title after your name with no responsibility attached. Contact an admin :-)

A personal thank you to every one of you for your support and encouragement. Together I am sure we will continue to do great things for our ACU and wider communities.

I have been a little quieter on the facebook and gAyCU front (well except the procrastination front) due to assessments and personal reasons and that will continue for a while yet. I am still around but I am a bit more limited in my time and energy available. Luckily, we have so many great people in our group who keep things going and help out when needed. If you are interested in helping out in any way, please contact me.

Good luck with your assessments and exams, hope to facebook you soon.

Monday 17 May marks International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO). It is also Gay Cu’s chosen “birthday”. To mark IDAHO, a diverse range of events are being held around the world and there are many actions that you can take to support the end of homophobia and transphobia. Attend an event, participate online, post a status update, call someone out for calling something gay (when it isn’t) and/or invite your friends to join our group (great "birthday" present for Gay!). Make a choice to do something against homophobia and transphobia this week.

GLORIAs (Gay and Lesbian Outrageous Ridiciculous and Ignorant comment Awards) -
